It is a problem that originates in the Windows Operating System when the computer fails to read data. There could be various reasons for the occurrence of such a problem, like bad sectors in the hard drive, problems with connectivity, or even damage to the system itself. The solutions to this problem involve the connection of the hard drive, the use of the CHKDSK tool, updating drivers, or formatting the hard drive.
The system stops accessing and writing data and gives an error message about the I/O device error when Windows faces difficulty in accessing and writing data. This error arises because of the effort by the system to access information from the external hard drive, USB, SD card, or even parts of the main hard disk. In doing so, it is unable to perform any tasks you have set out for it.
The error mentioned above, which is referred to as Error 0x8007045d, occurs due to an immense transfer of media files, updates, or backups. This error halts all other processes, which may cause further damage to the filesystem. It is important to know the cause of the error as well as its resolution process.
Before you begin repairing the system in stages, it will be beneficial for you to learn about what can lead to such a system error code.
● Bad Sectors on Storage Media: Damage physical or logical damage to hard drives and SSDs that prevent Windows from interpreting the data clusters.
● Physical Connections Faults: Malfunctioning USB cords, damaged or detached components, and faulty adapter hubs can distort the signal in file transfers.
● Damaged System/ File System Structures: In case of a quick shutdown or attack of malware, it can corrupt NTFS and FAT32 files.
● Outdated or Damaged Storage Drivers: Outdated disk drivers can prevent the motherboard from effectively communicating with storage drives, causing timeouts.
● CD/DVD Optical Drive Scratch: A scratched or contaminated CD/DVD will fail checks in the setup process.
Check all hardware connections first before you run any software tests.
Take out the external storage device from the port it is in now. Look at the connector to see if there is dust or any damage. Put it back in a rear USB port on your desktop motherboard or in another port on your laptop. Do not use USB splitters or extensions that do not have power.
Plug your hard drive or flash drive into another computer. If your files move over well on a different PC or media workstation, your first computer may have bad drivers or bad ports on the motherboard. It’s not the storage drive that is bad in this case.
The built-in tool finds problems on hard drives. It looks for bad spots and file errors. It marks damaged parts, so Windows does not use them, and things keep working well.
1. Press Windows key + S. Type cmd. Right-click Command Prompt and click Run as administrator.
2. Find out the letter of your storage drive under This PC (e.g., E drive).
3. Write this in the Command Prompt and press Enter: chkdsk E: /f /r /x (Replace E: with your drive letter).
4. If the utility asks you to remove the drive or run it during startup, write Y and press Enter.
Just wait till the utility completes its task. The time taken by the utility to perform its task can be from 20 minutes to a few hours, depending upon the size of the drive.
Bad device drivers bring timing delays between the operating system and drive controllers. This makes I/O timeouts happen.
● Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
● Open the Disk drives folder and select all storage hardware components that are connected.
● Right click on your storage hardware component and select Update Driver, then select Search automatically for drivers.
● If Windows detects that the best driver is already installed, right-click on the device name and select Uninstall device.
When this error occurs while moving system files or while upgrading Windows or restoring backups, it may indicate that certain system components are damaged.
● Scanning Core System Files
● Run the Command Prompt as Administrator.
● Use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool to run this command: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
● Type this command: sfc /scannow when the DISM tool indicates that it is 100% done.
Wait for it to complete the check of files. If any component in the system fails, SFC will replace the failed components with new components stored in the system cache.
If parts of the file system on the drive break beyond what can be fixed by normal tools, reformatting the drive gives it a new file list. It also marks any bad spots so they will not be used.
| Storage Drive Type | Recommended File System | Ideal Allocation Unit Size |
| Internal HDD / SSD | NTFS | 4096 Bytes (Default) |
| Large External Drives (>32GB) | exFAT | 128 KB |
| USB Flash Drives (<32GB) | FAT32 | 4096 Bytes |
● All readable data should be copied to some other storage media.
● Windows Key + X should be pressed, then Disk Management will be selected
● Right click on that part of the storage that gives problems, and select Format.
● Make sure Perform a quick format checkbox is not ticked for Windows to perform a full surface scan for bad sectors.
● Choose appropriate filesystem from the drop-down menu and press the OK button.
To repair storage issues in Windows, one needs to perform a set of hardware checks first. Next step will be trying to use CHKDSK utility or reinstalling the driver. In case the condition of the hardware gets worse, it is crucial to backup all important files in order to save them. Awareness of the causes of Error 0x8007045d will help to choose an appropriate solution.
